Why Resveratrol?Millions of people are already aware of the health benefits associated with Resveratrol, which is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the skin of red grapes, as well as a variety of plants.
Sometimes called “the fountain of youth,” the anti-aging effects and other healthful-related properties of Resveratrol have been featured on national news shows, such as 60 Minutes and Good Morning America, and in major publications such as CNN, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.
So, what’s all the fuss about? What’s so special about Resveratrol?
Usually, Resveratrol is discussed in terms of the role it plays in “the French paradox.” Briefly, this phenomenon refers to the fact that, although French people enjoy a diet relatively high in fat content (all those rich sauces and fancy pastries!), statistics have shown the French, on average, live longer, healthier lives than other Europeans and Americans. They also exhibit lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and other ailments.
A few years ago, scientists began suspecting that Resveratrol might be at least partly responsible for this unusual situation. Some of their research was based on the premise that, since French people consume red wine in higher quantities than other Western cultures, the secret might lie in the chemical ingredients of the wine.
Turns out, they were right.
Clinical tests on humans are still underway, but preliminary results issued by researchers on both sides of the Atlantic are encouraging – if not downright mind-boggling!
In the laboratory, Resveratrol has inhibited 17 forms of cancer. Studies have shown that it helps people age slower, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, and exerts positive effects on cholesterol and a host of other illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
Without getting too technical, Resveratrol is changing the platforms of disease research as scientists scamper to unlock its free radical scavenging ability and its cardio-protective characteristics.
